When you connect a camera to your computer, Kubuntu should pop-up a dialog box asking you for further action. If you select "digiKam Detect and Download", digiKam should open and begin importing pictures.

If auto-detection does not work, launch <application>digiKam</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>digiKam - Photo Management</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. Then select <menuchoice><guimenu>Camera</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add Camera...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and follow the instructions to add your camera.
